Arrival in Bodø & The Iconic Hurtigruten Crossing

  • After early breakfast, you will transfer to Oslo Gardermoen Airport for your flight to Bodø. Norwegian Airways DY340 departs to Bodo at 08:30 hrs and arrives Bodø Airport at 10.00 hrs. We are heading to Arctic Circle! Bodø is a coastal town situated at the entrance of a fjord system in Northern Norway. Historically, it had a significant fishing and shipping industry and has been rebuilt after being heavily bombed in World War II. Today it serves as a gateway to the Arctic circle.
  • Visit Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest tidal current, the natural wonder.
  • Upon arrival after security check in and early lunch we visit Saltstraumen. Saltstraumen is renowned for producing some of the strongest tidal currents in the world. Watch the world’s strongest tidal current at its strongest and admire the enormous forces of Mother Earth! Up to 400 million cubic metres of seawater forces its way through a 3 km) long and 150 m wide strait every six hours. Vortices known as whirlpools or maelstroms up to 10 m in diameter and 5 m in depth are formed when the current is at its strongest. At this point, one source claims that the tidal current can reach 40 km/h. Fish jumps out of the water like a fountain, being pressed out by the stream. Every few hours, massive volumes of seawater — up to 400 million cubic meters — rush through the narrow Saltstraumen strait, generating powerful whirlpools, swirling eddies, and foaming currents that can reach speeds of up to 20 knots.
