• We will reach Elephant Island in Antarctica. Elephant Island is one of the outermost of the South Shetland Islands. The roots of its name are argued to be one of two reasons. Either the fact that Elephant seals were seen hauled out here in large numbers by the first person to discover and map the island, Captain George Powell in 1821, or that the island’s shape is uncannily like that of a baby elephant’s head with trunk extended! Elephant Island is an ice-covered, mountainous island off the coast of Antarctica in the outer reaches of the South Shetland Islands, in the Southern Ocean. The island is situated 245 kilometers north-northeast of the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and 935 kilometers. The island remained unexplored for many years thanks in part to its lack of resources and partly because of its steep volcanic rocks, presenting few landing points. The main attraction here is the tiny rocky beach at Point Wild where nearly two dozen men were stranded for four and a half months in 1916 during Sir Ernest Shackleton’s doomed “Endurance” expedition, when their ship broke up in pack ice.
